A friend of ours took this at Epcot.

Very cool. I would guess these were cast out of something, but who knows. What I learned with my little 3-D facade adventure is that vermicrete makes a pretty decent sculptural medium. If I had seen these sooner, I might have had to imitate it...

No doubt! That is an awesome idea.

This was posted last October - I must have missed it.

          Re: Fire Breathing Monsters

I guess I missed this being posted previously--thanks Les! Much better photos!

Try it, TMan The only question I haven't answered for myself about how I would recreate this is what I'd finish coat it with--something heat resistant, and ideally, thin enough to be brushed or sprayed on. Or, I suppose with patience, one could do a skim coat of portland slurry and then go back and detail it before it cured.
Anyway, it's very cool and it gives me about ten other ideas for stuff I'd do with vermicrete.

            Nice ovens.

Vermicrete is so easy to work with I used it to sculpt the final shape of my oven before stucco.

              Re: Fire Breathing Monsters

I think we'll end up doing something like this after all. My wife is afraid of trying to use the rest of the perlcrete to shape this up, and is inclined towards plaster. I suppose for getting the definition of the face that would be fine since that would be right on the outside. It would push the flue a lot higher though and then we'd have to worry about how we'd get the cap on and off confidently.

                Re: Fire Breathing Monsters

My wife would like something like the old Mad Hatter drawings. I am trying to figure out how I might do this:

                http://singbookswithemily.files.word...mad_hatter.gif

It looks like I'd have to push the flue back and aways and build up a top hat, but I am wondering a good way to do the face. Any ideas?
