Flat Stone Chimney Cap?

I'd like to cap my 24"H chimney with some 1/2" thick slate I have, but I concerned about the heat degrading the stone. How hot are the gasses shooting out of that thing, and won't they destroy the stone pretty quickly?

I'd like to lay the slate piece flat, about 4" above the top of the chimney.

I saw Pizza Bob used a flat piece of stone, but it looks to be at least 2 inches thick. (link to his pic below)

I clocked the underside of the steel plate atop of my chimney with a laser.
The plate is 1mm steel and it was about 120c with a roaring fire.
The chimney is about 2.5M above the oven ceiling.

Thanks for the reply - I capped it with a flat slate piece this weekend, and it ran about 300F when going full blast, so I think it will be alright.

thanks for your pic of your cap - I like the simple approach.

I actuall had a nice cap fabricated with a gabled roof, but it didn't look good once I put in on. not sure what to do with it.
