  • Locking the oven

We will be starting the WFO for our community garden ,hopefully in the next few weeks
Its going to be in an easily accessible piece of park land .
What we need to incorporate for safety and security is a way of locking the oven so it cant burn some kids or be vandalised.
Does anyone have some ideas ?

You can make a lockable door, but it will have to be on the outer opening. Maybe you can have a blacksmith or ornamental iron fabricator make something up for you.

A roofed enclosure that could keep the oven dry, perhaps with some seats and benches inside. Maybe weld mesh sides covered in passionfruit vines.

Lockable security fence (ornamental iron or masonry or chain link; aesthetic choice) around the WFO.

Do a google search for "The St. Paul Bread Club" and contact David S. Cargo (he also goes by "escargot"). He researches and documents community ovens around the country and would very likely have some ideas, or even perhaps examples, that could help you.

Good luck with your community oven!

P.S. David also frequents the "Brick Oven Group" on Yahoo. That may also be a good place to pose this question.
