  • Chimney Options

I am wondering if anyone has experience with chimneys other than the double wall stainless? Particularly I like the thought of what I've seen called a Chimney pot, some I've seen are very decorative. Not ever having built a chimney I'm not sure how it works. Currently, I am building a 42" WFO and still a few weeks away from the chimney, but I'm planning on a 8". Do I use a 8" round flue pipe then attach the pot to it? If I do that, do I have to make a brick chimney?

    Re: Chimney Options

I have a 8.5" square clay flue tile for my flue, and it's just mortared onto my vent transition. I would think you could use a chimney pot in the same way.

Mind you, after less than 6 months use, my clay flue tile has cracked, I think due to a sudden rainstorm while it was still hot. So I'm not sure that a bare clay flue is actually a good idea, and insulating a chimney pot would defeat the purpose.

If you use a thin walled clay pot or flue liner it needs to be insulated otherwise the cold outside and hot inside will tend to make it crack. If the chimney is quite tall a pot on the top may be ok because it is way further from the heat and the temperature differential is not so severe.

Yes, I've seen some antique ones off of demo'd buildings that are beautiful. Since Posting this awhile ago I have decided to use the double wall stainless.
