  • Chimney opening size

I am getting ready to start on my chimney opening and I wanted to know if I can use regular bricks instead of firebricks outside the oven chamber, I would like to build a chimney opening like in the picture attached using regular bricks if I can.

    Thanks for your help.

In my opinion.....and there are differing ones on here.....any bricks that are or can be exposed to open flame should be firebrick. The same goes for the use of refractory mortar.

I cast the whole entry using cartable refractory. This makes it so much easier because you are not constrained by unit sizes of bricks and compound curves are simple to create. You can then make the whole entry nice and shallow which reduces the total depth of the thing making the oven much easier to work.
