Chimney Opening under the cap

We are working on the chimney of our 36" Pompeii with an limestone enclosure. The chimney has a 8 x 12 clay flue with limestone on the outside. We plan to have a stone "leg" in each corner of the top of the chimney. My question is what height should the legs be? Our cap will be a rectangle 2.75 inch thick limestone on the top the legs. It will overhang the legs on each side by 4 inches.

4-6" should be fine.

The resulting area should not be less than the internal cross sectional area of the flue pipe, or chimney. So don't go less than 96 sq in. More would be better.
