You know how I know Im overthinking this again... as always? The child whose baby shower I was rushing to get the oven finished for just started kindergarten today! Yes... over 5 years with no stucco. Vermicrete only! Fortunately its California and we don't get much rain, especially in the location I have it. Anyways, to button things up I need to get this done. I have the insulation blanket with a few inches of vermicrete over it. I need to waterproof it. I went to HD to get regular stucco and started second guessing myself. I don't know what to do now. I hear people talk about acrylic stucco but can't seem to find that easily. They have a hydraulic (non-portland) cement based stucco that they say you can do up to 2" in a single coat! No scratch, brown, color steps. Would that be a bad idea? At this point I dont care about the cost, I just want it done with a good product that I can source locally and quickly.... need it done!

If the hydraulic cement based stucco is pointless or worse, detrimental, there are two other products that seem to be normal stucco. They'll require a scratch, brown, and color coat. I have personally seen the local tradesman using the La Habra product so my gut is telling me that's the way to go between the three... Any thoughts? Keep in mind this is California so not much rain but every once in a while....

I went with LaHabra scratch and brown. Got the scratch done yesterday. I hadn’t seen the Permaflex because the local HD’s don’t carry it. Found some at Lowe’s though so I’ll have to get over there and pick up some of that. That’s for pointing me in that direction. I had some left over alkaline resistant glass fibers left over from my countertops so I through a bunch into the scratch coat. Seemed to work pretty well. I’ll get some pics.Comment

On the Permaflex, make sure you get the proper acrylic liquid color. Here's the insane part. I bought the Permaflex from Lowes who did not carry the color. I ordered the color from Home Depot website and as you know HD doesn't carry the Permaflex.

I was considering not adding color and using a water proofer followed by an elastomeric paint. Would that be a bad idea?Comment
