Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
I poured my own 1 1/2 in thick by 24 in by 48 in out of concrete.
Ground and polished the top using a 5 inch angle grinder.

Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
Kosta,
I have porcelain tile on my oven landing. I love the way it looks. When I build my seating bars, they will have matching porcelain tops. My prep area will have something solid (not sure what yet!).

Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
Hi all,
I'm surprised nobody mentioned the use of ceramic tile as counter top material. Not as nice looking as marble or granite but much cheaper.
My inside kitchen workbench is not usable for making pizza dough, so when I did pizza the other day I used a leftover tile that I had and it worked really well. Its 60*60 cm and thus the edges cause no problem. It has a very smooth glaced surface that is extremely durable and easy to clean. I will probably use this for my outside kitchen area.
Might be worth investigating in case you are looking for a cheaper solution.
Cheers.
Kosta

Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
I have a slab of black granite on which I prepare my pizzas, (made 24 today for an Easter family get together), but it shows every knife cut and pizza cutter marks. I would be devistated if I spent thousands of dollars on a complete granite bench top kitchen and have this happen. Also, granite or marble is hard, cold and unforgiving with fine wine glasses being put on and knocked over. (Yes I know, don't knock them over or don't drink or use polycarbonate glasses).
I like the laminated hardwood bench tops as they have much more character and warmth, easy to make and maintain.

Polished concrete.
Pour it yourself, you can make it any shape you want.

I agree that you can do something nice and decorative for your outdoor kitchen counters, and then use a piece of marble or something similar for pizza prep.
That's what I did.

Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
I have an ordinary bluestone step as the landing of my oven, and with it out in the elements, any food staining either isn't noticeable or it goes away. I'm not sure it would be a good pizzamaking surface, I would think you would want something smoother to get a peel under the dough. White marble is the traditional material for the work surface.

Re: Counter Top surface for pizza prep.
I have a 24 x 24 in x 2 inch thick piece of laminated wood from a scrap yard. I keep it inside unless I am making pizzas. I flour the board good and go for it. If there are any germs on it I figure they will burn in the oven. For my other ingredients I have an aluminum patio bar. Its a great height with several shelves. Anyway, thats what I have. My back yard and oven have a more rustic feel so it fits right in.

How does the honed bluestone work? My backyard is all bluestone, and i wanted to use blustone for the countertop, my granite guy said it would soak up all oils from pizza. just wondering if honed helps any. JOE

You mean this stuff? Pretty cool - and it does come in blue.Originally posted by Xabia Jim View PostOur last kitchen we went with the new quartz product and are very happy with it...can't really tell the difference from granite...
I think it would come in blue.
Vaughn says she would never put granite down again!

but the like blowing under a pizza to loosen it from a peel, the suggestion of unsanitary conditions (whether accurate or not) might be a detriment to a healthy appetite of some unknowing guest.
Aaah... That would be ME. The very reason I won't eat Birthday Cake.
Would you care for some spit ca... I mean birthday cake?

That figures... Well I could live with green or gold, or is it the same situation with those colors? The Oven itself will be faced with browish /tan tenn. flagstone.

I hope you have deep pockets, any blue is expensive, however there are quite a few available most of the nice ones are from brazil, but you should be able to get them locally
