  • Refractory mortar in Aus.

Any tips on where i can get refractory mortar in Australia or additives. I have been using portland cement, sand and lime for the majority of the bricklaying but want to insure that the chimney mortar joints dont crack. Thanks.

      Moley,
according to most of the members who used refractory mortar (rather than the home brew) in their oven builds, will ensure that you do get cracks.
I wouldn't use it for a home built oven!

      Cheers.

wash your bricks thoroughly, soak them in water for a couple of minutes, let them drain for another couple and use the homebrew, preferably with some fire clay as this makes the brew 'stickier'. With a really good bond onto the clean wt bricks, you shouldn't get any cracking. Using dusty or dry bricks , I will guarentee you separation (cracking) of your joints.
Remember also that your chimney will not get anywhere near as hot as your dome.

          Cheers.
