  • How fine should the sand be for home brew mortar?

    I asked the brickyard for fine sand, and they gave me Orange County Silica Sand with a "30" on the bag (100 lb bag). It seems pretty fine to me. I assume that I have #30 sand, correct? Is that grit fine enough, or do I need something smaller for the home brew?

    Resident FB authority Tscarborough's recommendation is to 'build' your homebrew mortar according to the size of the joint, starting with fine sand for the smallest joints and augmenting larger grits into the mix as the joint size increases. Try reading through this thread:
