Limestone as an alternative firebrick

Hi All

Firebricks are expensive here in Oz. My father in-law has these limestone slabs (approximately 600mmx300mmx75mm). I was wondering if limestone is a suitable alternative? I know that they use lime mortar in colder countries but that where my knowledge ends. I was thinking I could cut it down into appropriate size for the Pompeii oven. Its free which will save me considerable money. Putting the question out there. Can I use limestone as opposed to regular firebricks??

They burn limestone to make quick lime to make the hydrated lime you buy in a bag, so no you cant use it.

Bert,

Limestone blocks would make a great base material. You can do your enclosure and other construction features with it. Maybe even tint the mortar for color contrast, etc.

Yep, portland concrete is basically artificial limestone. I think you'd find the naturally occurring limestone would spall, crack, and crumble just as badly.
