  • Material for bricks construction

    Hi,
I read too many and i am lost now,i need your help again.

I read that calcium aluminate-lime-sand method hasn't got too many years life.
    Is it true?

In pompeii pdf plans i read also that:

Finally, makes sure that you do not use a wet, premixed
fireplace mortar with water-soluble binder. There are a
number of mortar brands designed for in-door fireplace
installation, where the mortar does not cure to a fully-cured,
waterproof state. This is the wrong product for pizza oven
    installation.
The seller who bought the calcium aluminate cement, suggest me to use 1:3 (C.A cement-chamotte) ratio but with chamotte instead of sand and nothing else. Not lime, not clay.

In your ovens which method did you use and which is the method for the oven to work properly for years?

    Thanks in advance,
    George

    Re: Material for bricks construction

    G'day George
Calcium aluminate ( ciment) certainly does cure and set to a fully water proof state not at all like the description of the fireplace mortar.
One thing I'm sure I've remembered that Davids has mentioned before that not to add lime to Calcium Aluminate as it sets it straight away with no time left to use it

        G'day George
You're the builder so its you decision in the end.
Mine I made on price . Hey ... we all have a budget, and mine was to put the money into firebrick and ceramic blanket. Expensive items and I'm lucky that the suppliers were in driving distance. Using the homebrew mortar was cost effective for me rather than being a cheap option. The oven got built, works, and was a bit over my budget in the end.

          Re: Material for bricks construction

          Hi Dave,

First, i want to know for the correct material to use and second for the price.

For example,i don't want to use a material which is against the correct method for ovens and for high temperatures.

The calcium aluminate cement with chamotte is the correct materials for this or i need to change it with other?

My seller also sell ready mix using in fireplaces, but in pompeii pdf plans write that must avoided.

          Many thanks

            Re: Material for bricks construction

I used Heatstop 50 which according to their website is 10-30% CaAl cement, sand (probably silica) and some other stuff... clay. I would think the CaAl cement mixed with the chamotte would work fine and have no issue with the heat temperature. One part cement with 3 chamotte would be roughly 25% cement, which seems in the same range as the heatstop 50.
