I thought I would share my experience with the insulated door that I built about a month ago using foamed glass grill cleaning blocks. I built my outdoor kitchen with a Casa 2g, which is supplied with a steel plate door. I've been firing the oven all winter, and when the temperatures dropped below freezing I found that my oven temps would be down to 200?F after 18 hours or so. With my new door I am holding 400?F after 24 hours, with the exterior temperature well below freezing.
I picked up a box of foamed glass grill cleaning blocks:

Sliced them in half as I felt they were too thick, and glued them to the steel door. I cut a piece of sheet metal to match and sandwiched the material between the two steel sections.
I've only had the door in place for a month, and a total of 5 firings, but so far they have held up very well.
Looking at the price of these blocks, I wonder if they would make a good insulating base for an oven.?
