Bricks de Mexico

Hi everyone, I acquired some bricks I'd like to use in my build. At least for exterior but does anyone think they'd work as a floor on their sides? They are 'hollow' The wall is about 1" thick at minimum, 4.5" total height of floor at that point with a built in air tunnel system. appreciate any thoughts for better or worse

They are 100% Red Clay trucked in from Mexico. I've burned one a bunch in a hot fire and it shows no signs of damage or even discoloration really.

Those are 1/2 height blocks. what are they made of and are you talking about using them as the oven floor??

They are 100% red clay and look more like terra cotta than red brick really. They measure 2.5 x 9.5 x 4.5

i'm curious about using them for the floor, on their sides, so 4.5" deep/high floor. No grout

These brick can be used in the decorative portion of your build (oven enclosure or decorative final outer dome layer) or structural base but not for the dome floor or dome walls. You need a refractory fire brick for the floor.

Yeah not not a good idea for the oven floor at all. I agree with Russell.

Thank You both. That is what I thought y'all would say but had hoped for some oddball miracle. I'll find some proper fire brick for the floor. Plan refractory 3:1:1:1 mix for dome. My general plans are linked below, changing on the regular tho.

As for fire brick, do you feel it needs to be 2.5" depth or would 1.25 splits work? And, ['ve read medium grade is the target, is there an accessible brand that fits this? Ammaco, Rutland, Old Castle, US Stove, etc?

Bricks will be over a ~6" deep Sand trap surrounded by 2.5" of refractory brew cement (possibly with glass bottles in sand too unless you say thats totally nutzo as well)

1.25" splits for the floor are not sufficient thickness for the floor unless you double up. You need the thickness for thermal mass. Sand/bottles are not your best option for floor insulation (relatively poor insulation). You would be better off with a 4" concrete hearth, then a min. 4" 5 to 1 p or v crete on top or if budget is not an issue min 2" CaSi board.
