Because, in most cases, it's vital to start with dry materials, particularly if the dry mix contains cement, or the recipe calls for additions by weight rather than by volume, I do have a problem with their storage. Usually sand is moist or wet from the building supplier and they also often water it to reduce dust, so I have to sift and dry it before use. I made some storage bins with a hinged lid which prevents water entry, but also provides airflow. This works pretty well, but after a downpour water flowing around the bottom wicks up into the sand. Following a cyclone in our city and with one bin nearly empty I decide it was time for a solution. The brick offcuts covered with a fibre cement sheet and holes in the bottom front board should do the trick.
