  • Where to buy in or around Toronto, Canada ?

    Hey guys, how are you.

I am looking for firebricks and mortar mix to fix my woodstove.
    / Yeah, I know it's not an oven /

Can anyone give me a suggestion where I can find materials needed in GTA area? if you know more than one or suggest someone in particular let me know why

    Thank you in advance.

    Danny.

An ordinary brickyard or masonry supply should have both full thickness and half thickness firebricks, and some sort of high temp. mortar mix. Do a google maps search for masonry supplies, you should have a number to choose from.

GTA = Greater Toronto Area. I don't have an answer to where to get supplies.
It would be nice if there was a forum page that dealt with things like GTA, FB, KA etc KA seems to have two meanings Kitchen aide and King Arthur... reading can drive an unfamiliar person half crazy when you can't find the meanings of these abbreviations
I would have a shot at the answer, if I had the appropriate question.

Patene Building Supplies will have everything that you need. The web site says it's on Trafalgar near the 401.
If you feel like driving to Brantford, the owner of Venture Refractory will provide you with a ton of information, and have better prices than Patene to boot.

            Danny,
Get in touch with CanuckJim on this site. If you're in Scarberia (sorry), he's not that far from you - Prince Albert, near Port Perry. He'll give you good sources.

Has anyone compared all of these recently? I'm having trouble (without much effort) finding basic prices for stuff like fire bricks and cinder blocks...

It would be nice to get a comprehensive listing of where to buy:
                    - firebrick (I visited Alphatherm today - Elvis was very helpful and prices sounded good): about $1.79 per 4x9 brick
                    - refractory mortar - same deal - about $50 per bucket
                    - cinder block (no idea where best to buy these - they're $3 at RONA - seems expensive)
                    - Vermiculite or Perlite - Where does one find this?
                    - Concrete delivery or mix at home?
                    - stucco

                      about $50 per bucket
For oven building, avoid wet pre-mix mortar in buckets. Many problems reported.

Re: Where to buy in or around Toronto, Canada ?

                        Kelly,

The firebrick vary by area, but it pays to shop. I found prices from $2.40 to $1.07 per brick in the San Diego area. There were some factory seconds that I missed out on that were .25 per brick. Most likely to get best prices at Masonry supply yards
Vermiculite /Perlite ( they are interchangeable) - I found them at Home Depot and Lowes ( big box home improvement centers) about $16 per 2 cu ft bag. Figure out your volume, then add 20% for shrinkage once you add water and Portland cement to save yourself a couple of trips at the last minute.
                        Good luck

                        Eric

Thanks. I'm also ordering cement to be delivered which is more expensive, but a good tradeoff personally in terms of time.

is there anyone that has built in Toronto proper that has a good source for perlite and fire mortar?

For vermiculite, just go to a decent size garden center. It should cost around $20 for a large bag.
