Need small pieces of insulating blanket or board

My wood door caught on fire so my new idea is to make a metal door with some high heat insulation sandwiched in between.

Does anyone know where I could order small amounts (about 1' X 2') of high heat insulation that would work? I'm in the US (southern california, los angeles county).

Dean - I tossed all my scrap or you could have had it for free. When I built my door, I poured loose vermiculite in between the aluminum plates. Just an option...

Another option is to use the scorched wooden door, add some insulation and sandwich it between behind some expanded metal mesh as I did. It is a breeze to make and very efficient, more so than metal doors which absorb and then transmit the heat. See:

That's a real good idea too. I do like the look of my wood door and unfortunately when I built the opening I didn't make it larger so that the door would seal up against the brick; your way would certainly help with sealing off the heat! I tried using some hard foam insulation with a thin aluminum face that I got at a hardware store, but it burned up as well (along with the concrete backerboard in front of it!).

depending on how you have built your oven door/entrance, with or mistakenly forgot to put in a reveal (an edge to sit your removable door up against to seal the oven), you can get this fibre-glass braided sealing rope from wood fired heater stores (as it is used to seal heaters, kilns and ovens), and attach it to the perforated metal door that I suggested.
See the pics for details, the rope is available (well at least here in Australia) in a multitude of sizes from 1/4" to 1" diameter.

It's funny, because I heat my house with a wood burning stove and last week I noticed that the glass was leaking smoke and I realized I need to get some more sealing rope--I didn't think that I could use that rope for my oven door too!

Any new builders, don't be like me and forget to build a reveal into your opening!

I came across FB forum AFTER my build and also did'nt include a reveal. I can adapt a reveal and the idea from Nissanniel looks brilliant, but I am seriously contemplating knocking the dome part off my base and rebuilding it.

there are other ways in which you can provide a reveal for a door to seal against without going back to square ONE and starting again.
Why not look at getting some 1"X1" angle iron and bending it to your oven entrance shape (if it is arched) or simply make up a square angle frame and using countersunk dynabolts, screw it securely to the bricks. They only need to be relatively small bolts which will leave you with a 1" reveal or edge that you can seal your door. Put some rope around the front of the 2 sides and top and under the bottom of your door and WHALLAH, a 'sealable door'!!!!!

Just a thought.

Just a note on the insulating rope. If the oven is too hot when you put a wood door on, the wood will still burn even if no wood touches the brick. I wish I had pictures of my nice new wood door with a hole burned through it.

Like the angle iron idea, but in my case my opening is just small enough than adding any reveal would prevent me getting a pizza in!

Joe,
with a double layer of superwool in front of the wooden portion of the door, held together with some perforated steel mesh, virtually no heat will get to the wood.
I have proved that on many occasions when getting my oven to over 500˚C (pizzas in 60 second temperatures), closing the door with the fire still in the oven (to allow the bricks to soak), the door hasn't got warm, let alone hot.

either make oval rather than circular pizzas, smaller ones, or leave the bottom 3 or 4" of the angle off then, leaving the maximum entrance width and if you have your rope wired to the expanded mesh out on the edges, you will lose minimum heat. There will always be a compromise somewhere, but anything that helps is worthwhile. You could always reduce this angle to 1/2" if needs be also.

Many thanks Niell for the advice. Might go on your plan B of drilling and fixing a couple of lugs for a stop for the door, before taking further drastic action.

YES! after hours of (even more) searching, I found morelectricheating.com which will cut off of a roll! $2.85/sq.ft with a $25 min order and $10 shipping. Still a little bit of $ but I'll end up with some extra that I might find a use for someplace else.

You might look locally for "firestopping". It's the same thing as refractory blanket, and it's sold to contractors to fill cavities in buildings to comply with building code. It's not cheap either, but its sold in small quantities and you can get it at a proper building supply.
