  • How many firebrick?

I am trying to estimate how many firebrick I am going to need. I tried counting brick in a few of the pictures, but cannot tell if I am getting an accurate count because some of the bricks are cut, is that half bricks? So I was wondering if anyone has details?

What size oven did you build and how many firebricks did you use?

    36" and I used 225 brick...I think..

do a search, there are some good post on here with different sizes. If you taper all 4 sides you will use more. I tapered.

    good luck.

My 40"Pompeii was built with 140 firebricks (dome were cut in halves lengthwise) with full bricks laid on their largest size BUT I did use normal house bricks for my front and chimney void.
Cutting the dome bricks adds alot of time, expense and doesn't make it cook nor heat better or quicker. It is purely a matter of choice.

the main driver for me doing the 4 sided tapers was the Heatstop 50 mortar called for very thin joints. If you don't taper them you'll end up with 1/2+ of mortar in the back of every joint. Plus, I figured if it cracked, which it did, at least the tapers and graviety would hold it all together.

It is alot of cutting and more brick though.

          Ditto.

I recall buying 280 brick for a 42 inch. There is a lot of waste though when you taper them.

The plan says on a 36" Pompeii you should plan on 180 brick.

I bought 180 and only had a couple full brick left over at the end of the project. I did not make a real effort to taper the brick. Near the top of the dome, I did taper the last few chains of brick, but down low in the first 5 or 6 chains, I did not taper the brick at all.

                About 250 for a 42 inch.

One more chime in......36", bought 215 bricks, used 206 - cut to fit, meticulously measured to maximize brick usage (did not want to run out then drive 50 miles each way for more).
Actually had more firebrick sludge from the wet saw than I did leftover pieces.
