    I decided to go with the 3" wall thickness to maximize floor space. Starting from the 4th course up I can and might go with 4.5" bricks, as there will enough clearance from that course on upward.

    This is what I built and I am glad I did. It is a little trickier to make but you get much improved visibility and accessibility into the oven.
    Those were exactly the two reasons for the flared opening.
    Also, the fire in the chamber can be seen from a wider area.

    Yes, that makes more sense. It is possible to squeeze your oven opening into the insulation circle, but it makes it more difficult. I did pretty much the same thing, and ended building part of my flue support on the top of my dome.

    It's really easier if you give yourself a little more room to work.

    Thanks again, olddude.
    I realize I don't have much latitude trying to build the largest oven I can fit within a 48" circle, especially placement and design of vent/entry. But I think got it figured out and your cad drawing pretty much nails it.

    "As far as the shallow entry goes, it will be rectangular with a flared side wall opening. "

    This is what I built and I am glad I did. It is a little trickier to make but you get much improved visibility and accessibility into the oven. Another benefit is that you can design a door with "wings" the same angle as the flare. This makes the door easier to place, makes a better seal and is freestanding without a base or struts.

    That's olddude's drawing. I don't think the square lines drawn inside the chamber are part of the vent.

    i keep trying to send you a readable cad drawing showing 2'8" in side
    4 /2" wall 3" of insulation then you could stucco the out side

    from what i've seen on this site and others make the oven smaller stay with the 3" of mas but you need more insulation

    thermal mas is where the heat is stored for none fire cooking

    so if your insulation is small you will lose heat fast
    so even if you had 5" of mass wouldn't mean anything

    question how will you be cooking for
