In the process of installing our casa 2g. Its an enclosure. Can we use sandstone for the arch or do we need standard brick? Does this area heat up to the extent that sandstone will crack/explode?

Are you referring to the decorative arch? It gets hot there but standard material will/should survive. You are mid point between fire and ambient temps. At that point I started using type s mortar.
