  • Infrared gun ... how hot can the oven get?

    Hello

I'm looking at various infrared guns. Most of them give a maximum reading of 700f. Will that be high enough to measure the temperature in a 42" WFO? How hot can it get in the oven?

Any advice will be appreciated ... thanks

I bought the gun at the FB expo and I've measured 1200F in my 42" oven.

The Harbor Freight thermo gun goes to 1000, which my oven maxes out without a sweat.

I think you'd need one to go at least to 900

I basically agree with Mike. While a hearth at 900 is too hot to cook on IMO, it is nice to have some idea how far it is above your preferred temp. Being able to read hotter has minimal real value IMO but is great for curiosity The dome can definitely hit the 1200 range. Mine is a Raytek and goes to about 930 F which is okay. It seems to be very accurate and reliable.

Please let us know what you get and how you like it.

I recently bought a Raytek (identical to Fluke) thermometer which reads to 932F. I got it from Amazon after reading several good reviews on the unit.

My wife bought me an Extech #42512 for Christmas, it measures from -58F to 1832F. Have not had it above 1200F that I can remember.
My previous Extech which was rated to around 1150F would read up to 1400F before going into error.....I acheived that several times burning citrus. I'm really sold on the Extechs, they can be pricey, but are dead accurate and can take a serious beating and continue to work. The old one was left in front of the oven during a raging fire, melted it so badly that I had to tape the laser light in place as well as wrap the 3 piece housing with electrical tape to keep it together...and it still reads within 10-15 degrees of the new one.

                Hi RT!

That is a sad, but almost humorous tale!
