One of the amazing things about this technology, retained heat masonry oven (- pizza oven -) is that you can heat the oven with anything that burns.
Now, a guy needs to make some choices along the way.
Things like, is this fuel dangerous? Things like gasoline I would consider dangerous - burns to fast - will blow up - things like that.
Is this fuel going to ruin my food? Something like plastic, it will burn, but I don't want the residue from burning plastic on my food. Or something like wood that has been treated with a preservative. I don't want that smoke on my food so it won't go in my oven.
So, if it passes the common sense rules, you can use it in your oven. To add a short answer to your question, yes you can use charcoal to heat your oven. (as a side note, you can use your oven to make charcoal - but that is another story).
