  • Can I use Clay?

    Hi all,

I am have trouble getting my hands on Mortar Clay or Fire Clay, up here in the tropics. So I went to an art suppler and they have Clay powder that can withstand temperatures to 800 centigrade.

Can I use this in the dome mortar instead of Mortar Clay/Fire Clay...?

    Cheers

    Re: Can I use Clay?

Anyplace that can get powdered clay, a pottery supply, will be able to get you fireclay. It's better and cheaper.

As far as art clays, there are literally hundreds of them. It would be hard to comment without knowing the specific product.

The Clay that they have is "Walkers stoneware No:10" the only info that they could give me is

      Shrinkage % @ ? C = 12.5@1300
      Water absorb % = <0.5
      Vitrified Temp ?C = 1260

      Would this do?

      Cheers

I went back to the art suppler to ask for some more information and he said:

        Name: Walker stoneware No:10
        Shrinkage % @ ? C = 12.5@1300
        Water absorb % = <0.5
        Vitrified Temp ?C =1260

        Will this do?
