From reading the installation manual, it appears that the bricks are just placed together, without mortar. But, the picture on page 34 looks as if the joints between the bricks are sealed with mortar. Is there any need to do anything other than make sure they fit tightly together? TIA.

Do not mortar the floor. You are correct - just place them tightly together, and more important, level.Check out my pictures here:
