    Re: Brick or lazy modular

Thanks, I just posted those photos to him. Going to take me a day to read the 17 pages from his posting but I looked thru, and liked that oven.
    Thanks for letting me know

      Hi Dirtydog,

Its beautiful, but I hope that you are not considering buying this. You can bolt a grill shell over some fire bricks, yourself, and it still wouldn't be a functioning oven. Just my opinion.

Na, I will still build my oven myself. I do however really like the look of this stainless steel arch.
I don't know if I could find a way to make one myself. There are many small metalworking shops around, perhaps I could get someone to fabricate one for me. But I wonder about heat transfer. If this is attached to the brickwork it might pick up heat through the contact and make the oven difficult to use. I guess it would have to be insulated at the points of contact.

          Re: Brick or lazy modular

The ovens on that site are modular brick ovens, the company is Zesti in Australia. I have no idea whether they are any good or not. I do know that they are not what I want though. If I wanted a modular oven I would have bought the FB one a long time ago and been done with it.
What I want is a real brick oven and something that hopefully I can be proud to say I built it with my own two hands.
As I said I like the look of the stainless front. I hesitate to have one fabricated or buy the arch from Zesti even as I would even prefer to try to fabricate one myself. Possibly just build the brick arch then cover it with a stainless steel shell. The upper and lower sides would be simple enough just welding an arch shaped front to it to cover the leading edge would probably be difficult. Difficult to make it look like it was all one piece anyway.

            Re: Brick or lazy modular

At least, being a pilot I have engineer friends that are accustomed to working in sheet metal as most helicopter fusilages are still sheet metal. Hopefully, I will be able to tap the expertise of theirs for guidance on how to do this.
But if anyone else has ideas in the meantime, I am all ears.

              Re: Brick or lazy modular

... are you thinking of using a steel arch with a brick dome? Because I was thinking about doing that. I would be afraid that it would expand or crack up being a different material. If you go with Wiley's full metal oven design you may run into trouble getting help if you need it. I could probably go with a design like his but I feel safer using things that are fixable or replaceable over time. I also just don't like the idea of not having expectations of the way the material ( the metal) would react with my cooking. Having said that it may be a better choice to use a steel arch for a whole host of reasons depending on how you use it. If you can figure a way to integrate a steel archway in it may give you some benefits... I just don't know. I'm still working on my oven. Hopefully I get it done soon. I have "enjoyed" working on it long enough.

              Good luck.

                Re: Brick or lazy modular

Steel Arch/Brick Oven is exactly what I would like to do.

There must be a way to fasten the two together to allow for the thermal expansion. Although, I doubt there is much expansion in the Stainless the problem must be in the interface of the two.

                  Re: Brick or lazy modular

Why not use a ceramic insulation banket layer betwen the brick and the stainless dome/entrance cover to take up any differences in expantion rates?
