the deck itself will be composite, like trex. It won't catch fire but I'll keep it covered to keep it looking nice. That will also protect the joists.

I use pine on start up and I have seen pieces pop out 5 foot. I think you will be fine if you use a quality wood and keep an eye on it during start up.

    Gudday Davids
I have a plastic drain running the full length of my oven, the metal ones rust in this climate. Presently use a wet potato sack to cover it when removing ash and coals. That checker plate sounds like a simple and good looking solution to my problem. Thanks Davids
    Regards dave

In this situation I screw down a piece of aluminium checker plate over the decking boards just under and in front of the oven mouth.

I've had mine up and running for several months, have yet to see any sparks come out the front. Agree with the coals that may drop, and a rubber mat or similar would work well. So would a stone or cement patio right in front of the oven.

    Or get a hearth rug.

You will drop some coals out of the oven when moving from firing to cooking, but they are minor. Just take care, maybe put a rubber mat down when firing so the coals do not fall in the gaps.

Its a ground level deck. 2x6 sleepers on grond level. I'm pouring the foundation of the wfo to be flush with the deck. My concern is catching the deck on fire.

Not quite sure I understand the question. How high is the deck? And the WFO?

What sort of issues are you worried about?

Composite Deck right up to the WFO?

My plan is to construct a deck right up to WFO. I will be using wood joists but composite deck boards. Is there any issue with doing this? If so, can I just put a thin piece of sheet metal over the joists, but below the composite deck?
    Thanks
