Hi Guys

Anyone thought about using a product like this on top of the vermiculite concrete layer?

Dunlop 5kg Floor Leveller I/N 6829515 | Bunnings Warehouse

Its a self levelling cement based compound that will fill any uneven gaps. I could then go over with a very thin layer of fireclay slurry to set the floor bricks...

That stuffs a sloppy mix which finds its own level. Leveling the hearth bricks you want a moist mix of sand clay which you comb with a notched trowel ( a plastic bunnings special will do). When you lay the bricks into position its just lay into position and a coupla gentle taps on brick to level. Drop each brick into position rather than sliding to the next brick which results in the sand clay mix seperating the bricks.

PS if the dry insulation layer sucks the water from your sand clay mix and makes it hard to work a smear of table margarine over the insulation will help. I know you'll laugh... But it's simple available and works!

Yep. Thanks.

Used the levelling stuff before was just thinking put that first to level out the divots which I didn't realise were there, let it set, then the slurry fire clay mix... Reckon it would be ok?

No I don't think it will be OK. The clay and sands the fire proof leveler that you need. The self levelers for house tiles not brick that will taken to temp extremes.

Fluid mixes like that are Portland based, and will degrade quickly. Leaving your form on after you pour the insulating mix will provide a surface to screed your leveling mix (fireclay/finesand) over the uneven insulation surface.
