Thanks - I added a barrier top and bottom - might not have thought of that but for your advice. I am very happy with the posts - the extra effort of rolling them out of the woods (etc.) was well worth it now that it is done.

Every oven has a point of distinction and those posts look grand. Nothing better than using the local materials to make the difference (and save a $$ too).

Definitely use a waterproof membrane between your posts and concrete....top and bottom. And don't fix any anchors into the posts to either the deck or the oven structural slab either...they should be independent of each other.

The posts look beautiful, they should make a dynamite base.

Yes I agree that does look great. Big enough that no one will be tempted to throw them in the oven! Too
You could just slip a bit of builders plastic underneath to stop moisture from wicking up

As concrete blocks are expensive on this island (d/t shipping weight) I had the brilliant(?) idea of using two large ceder posts salvaged from the woods by my house in place of some of the concrete blocks. After hours of sanding and oiling, they look good... but - will this mix of materials underneath the concrete base I am getting ready to pour cause cracking problems? Also - would it be advisable to put some mortar under these massive ceder posts - to lift them slightly off ground level, or should they be Ok the way they are - directly on the cement pad.
