So i'm planning on welding a chimney insert, but I'm curious about the temps that come through it. Let's say that the internal oven temperature is 900F, would that mean that the airflow through the chimney vent would also be 900F or would it cool off some and if so, how much? I'm trying to figure out what gauge of steel to use for the fab. I'm thinking something like 10ga is probably more than enough, but want to make sure I don't get any warping etc.

I put a thermocouple at the entrance to the chimney and I see temperatures north of 1,000 degrees! Not sure how accurate this is. -

Ok. I guess I could put a couple of supporting struts in there to keep the warping down or maybe just use a thicker gauge of steel. Ah, the joys of having the right tools for the job!

I've shot my laser thermometer on the steel chimney cap I made a few times and don't recall it getting over 200 degrees. If I remember correctly, it's usually around 150. The entrance doesn't get nearly as hot as the dome.Comment

so i have a potential 850 degree variance here.... 1/4" plate it is!
