  • Advice on wood storage opening.

    All,
I have been lurking around for some time now and I am finally ready to start my Pompeii style oven. After several renditions on paper for the size of the foundation and stand I have optimized the sizes for ease of construction (no block cutting) and the width of my stand is (64"). My question is this. My plan was to have a 32" wood storage opening and 16" on each side of opening. Is 32" to wide of a span to bridge for the opening? I don't want to jeopardize the structural integrity of the hearth. I assume it's not, but word from the experienced would give me peace of mind, for now. Thanks.

Let one of the engineers weigh in, but I say it is fine. My walls were actually a U shape...

32 inches is only a span of 2 block - that appears to be the norm. I went 2.5 block because I finished the inside with brick. You'll be fine, the angle iron can support a lot of weight.
