  • Exterior brick shell

I wondered if anyone has done an exterior shell of brick for their oven. It seems like it would be a nice way to replicate the hidden artistry inside. It also might make pouring the insulating layer easier as it wouldn't have to be layered up in the same way, but simply filled up.

    Any thoughts?

I love the idea. It would have to be considerably larger though.

Not sure if anyone has built a second dome out of brick around the cooking dome.
But I haven't been on this forum for too long.

I am sure others will weigh in on the subject.

      Danny,

Luis has done this and it looks great. He has the pic's in a thread so you will have to dig for it.

        here's the pic:

        from this thread.

You could do the same thing with tile: might be easier to cut closely. Remember this oven in under a roof: I don't know how waterproof it is.

          Wow!
          That's great looking.

It might be my favorite now!

            Wow, Thanks
            It looks great.
I hadn't thought about water permiability. Do you know how permiable brick and mortar are?

I guess tile would make a better seal, but that would kill the idea of pouring in the insulation.

              Hi Daniel,

There's another interesting example of an oven finished like this at:

              Gallery

If you click on the Oliver photo you?ll see a variety of pics of the oven that chef Jamie Oliver installed in his garden. No roof there so they must have used water-resistant materials of some sort.
As well (though a bit off-topic), depending on your location, you may be able to tune in to Oliver?s TV show ?Jamie at Home? which shows him cooking in it at some point on most shows ? great for those of us who haven?t yet completed construction as it gives a glimpse of what we can look forward to.
No matter what overall finish-style I finally settle on (I?m contemplating that kind of bricked dome), I really like the twisted chimney seen on Jamie?s oven and hope to put that style on my oven.
              Good luck with yours!

              Sarah

Hey Sarah, Thanks. I like it, although I wish it had a bigger landing. I wonder why the wood store is on the side. I also notice that the oven floor isn't made with fire brick. What's the story there?

                  Re: Exterior brick shell

My guess is that it is some sort of refractory floor, or it's soapstone.
