  • Insulating with stonewool

I'll put this post back here again, as this is where people are likely to be looking for info on insulation.

So, as I said, I have insulated the dome of my oven with a stonewool product called Flumroc, because it was all I could get hold of. I put two 1 m wide strips of 5 cm thick Flumroc over the dome, one in each direction, so the top of the dome is covered with a double layer.

Its disgusting to work with, will make you itch soon as you look at it... but I'm pleased with its insulating properties. Two days ago I lit a BIG fire in the oven, and the top of the oven only got very very slightly warm. And the inside of the oven is STILL warmer than the outside air two days later, after two nights of freezing temperatures... seems pretty impressive to me.

One drawback is this insulation shouldn't get wet (hence the foil finish on the outside). Looks like some kind of space shuttle

I'll be adding a vermiculite layer as well, so I'm currently wondering how to do that without getting the Flumroc wet. I'm sure I'll think of something though...

So, has anyone else here insulated their oven with a similar product?
"Building a Brick oven is the most fun anyone can have by themselves." (Terry Pratchett... slightly amended)
