A thin layer of refractory cement between the layers would help conduct the heat but I think you could do without.

Oh that can be a solution, thanks for your input. I understand that there will not be any mortar between the layers?
Although I must say I don't think I've seen any build that does it

The thicker the floor is, the longer it will retain heat. I see no reason you couldn't lay 2 layers of the thinner bricks to create a 4 inch layer and still maintain the look you want as you have enough bricks for it.. If you are just cooking Pizzas then the 2 inch floor will probably be sufficient.

    brick orientation

    Hi Guys,
so in a opportune craiglist moment I acquired bunch of yellow firebrick sized 2"x4"x9" (which i understans is somewhat strange size), came in a pack of about 400 pieces so now i'm all stocked up for my build. looking at builds of other members here i see that a lot of builders do lay the floor bricks flat to use as few as possible. while i have more then enough material to go with 4" thick floor i do visually like more how the floor looks when 4x9 face is up (planning on herring bone layout). so the question is what will i be missing if my floor is 2" thick?
    thanks!
Working...
