  • Tiling and covering over refractory cement dome

    Hello,

Currently I have been covering my pizza oven with a plastic tarp when not in use. As expected, the cover is not very appealing.

I wanted to cover the oven to keep it dry when not in use and to protect it from the elements. I live in NC which has 4 seasons including extreme heat and cold.

Would covering the oven in tiles be a smart move (inspired by the picture of the Forno Bravo Oven on the main page) Is there any material/tile one could recommend?

The refractory cement that i used is intended for outdoor use however i want to make sure I keep all of the moisture out. (Rather be safe than sorry)

    Thank you in advance!

    Eric

Tile is not a waterproof material - even in your shower there is a waterproof membrane. It would probably be fine in a dry climate, but not if you have a lot of rain. My advice for a dome is usually to build it under a cover. But I know Russell has his outside in SLC, and I haven't heard him say he's had water damage. If course, he covered his with hand-made copper shingles....
