  • Hearth Help

Hello All, I am pouring my capstone tonight and will be moving the the hearth/insulation under the floor next. I have a couple of ideas on how to proceed, but wanted some feed back before I make a mistake I cannot go back and fix.

    A. My plan was to outline the capstone in brick, mix about 1.5 inches of perlite/Portland cement mix, and then a split fire brick for the cooking surface. Is that amount of insulation under the brick sufficient? Should I use a full 4.5 inch fire brick instead to retain heath in the floor?

    B. My original plan was to use 1 inch of insulation board, a Perilite/Portland cement mix on top of that, and then a full fire brick floor. I have been hesitant to do this method because it felt off how high the cooking surface would be above my capstone (6+ inches).

My main question is will I have a big heat loss if I use the split fire brick above the insulation? Or should I design it around full 4.5 inch thick bricks? The half bricks will help me visualize the height and plan around it better.

Any help at all will help point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance
