I was wondering if a U shaped stone wall can be used instead of concrete blocks and slab footing. in other words: can the stone wall replace tha blocks that support the hearth slab?

Re: Stone wall foundation
You should probably have some sort of foundation under it. You don't want the ground to shift, sink, heave or settle under your hard work.
Perhaps a few inches of compacted rock or gravel under a stone wall?Ken H. - Kentucky
