The kids' contribution

OK, confession time. Our families have all had to pay for the time we spend on our ovens. It was pointed out to me, though, that my kids have had to pay in other ways. I've been using their stuff.

Here's their wagon. I use it to bring my stuff from the garage to the build site every day.


The sand box has been recruited to soak bricks before cutting.


Sand toys to re-purpose the fire-clay after cutting brick.


Yep. This is what I mix small batches of mortar in.


Please tell me I'm not alone. I'm beginning to feel guilty!

Not at all. i thought I was the only one who used my kids wagon to ferry stuff to the back yard. Worked better than the wheelbarrow.

LOL, nope, you're not alone. I've repurposed a number of items, including some from my four year old.

--Ainsley's sandbox bucket is now used for bailing concrete into cores.
--I mix mortar in a 9x13 cake pan
--I mix the mortar with a kitchen spatula
--I scoop the dry mortar with a large kitchen serving spoon
--I dug footings for the firepit and seating wall with my daughter's rainbow-striped small shovel (it's the perfect size!)
--firebricks soak in my daughter's wading pool

Yep, me too also

Childrens' buckets are just great for mixing small batches of mortar. And I use one of their nice colourful plasic cups to measure the dry mortar.
