Dinos base design in 3D sketch

Here is a pic of my design plans for my 42" oven stand. I like Mike's (mfiore) idea of blocking across the oven stand storage to bring it down to 2 reasonable size storage compartments. I drew the concrete blocks to scale (3/8" short of the nominal 8x8x16 concrete blocks) because I want to be sure it will fit in my planter by a patio. Yes, I should be digging my footings instead playing with Google sketch-up but hey, it was fun. This will be my 1st time posting a picture (of a sketch) or starting a thread but I need to learn so I can document the real thing in the next few months. Here goes...

I see you're dressing appropriately for the weather... layers are good in the fall.

seriously though, I think dividing up the space underneath it probably a good idea. Not sure about the depth you've got going in the second space though. Can you reach to the back?

Hi Elizebeth,
I was actually having a glass of wine at a restaurant in Italy last summer where we had pizza at several old restaurants in Naples. Since that is what got me excited about pizza ovens, I thought that pic was appropriate.

But ya, that space is only 2' wide so it should be good for something. I was also considering moving that bisecting wall closer to the front 8". I think I need to read some posts about the size of wood for the oven fires. That will tell me how deep the front needs to be.

Wow Dino, your much better at Sketchup than I!

I too really like the idea of splitting up the storage space and intend to do something similar. Do you plan to support the hearth slab with a brick arch or something where the storage doors are?

actually I was talking about the guy in the second sketchup pic. He's got on a t shirt and a long-sleeve shirt at the same time. I just thought it was funny. Not your avatar, which is great. I have a similar pic of my husband!

We had pizza in Naples several years ago- it was nothing like the pizza we had in Rome. Which sadly, was just icky. Our trips to Italy are what made me want a wfo too!

My firewood is cut into lengths probably about 14 to 18 inches long. Some are a little shorter. It's an easily manageable size for me, not too heavy to chuck to the back or to the side accurately. I was just concerned that if it's 2 feet by 5 feet, you won't be able to reach things that get all the way to the back of the space.

And then, there are the bugs and things you can't see back there....

Point well taken about a 5' deep storage space. Maybe I'll see if I have room in the back for an opening matching the front. I'm still relocating my Rasberry patch before I see how much room and access I have from the rear. And that guy in the drawing comes with the Google Sketch-up program to help you with persective (and make you feel hot with his long sleeves.)

I was going to just top off the blocks with a piece of about a 5' square concrete backerboard (hardiback?) that overlaps the concrete block edges by 2" and brace it from below of course, then pour my 4" slab right on it. I would bend the rebar sticking out of the blocks into the 4" slab and I'm thinking that will support the opeing without an angle iron and a row of blocks for a lintel. I'll post some cad drawings of what I'm hoping it will look like next week. If the "balance" looks off by doing that, I may end up with a top row of block. And yah, Sketchup is pretty cool once you get hang of it.

If you could move the opening to the back, you wouldn't have to make it all the way across- it could just be a centered opening, and you could reach in sideways on each side. However, raspberry canes in one's backside are not comfy, so if you can't get there, you can't!
