  • Chimney Thermometer

    Hi Forum,
Has anyone ever used a chimney thermometer to check oven temp. ?
Its a mechanical rig and can be bought for under 20 bucks. Thanks for your help

How can a chimney thermometer be of much help ? Lets say you've fired up your oven for about two hours, it's hit 400 C and you let the flames die down ready to cook some pizza and it's not long after that you can place your hand on the outside of the single walled fluepipe. So what's the chimney temp ? About 120 C when the oven is still at 400 C How is that useful ? Seems like it's just confusing.

Now I understand, what is its temp range ? Most wood oven cooks seem to dispense with temp guages altogether once you've tuned into it. The little cheap kitchen oven thermometers you place inside the oven are good, but don't read up to pizza temp. Just wait until the whole of the inside of the oven turns white. I also use my watch. Usually one hour of firing for roasts and baking, two hours for pizza, or prolonged baking.
