Rebar cost

I'm curious how much most people spend on rebar for this project: foundation, stand, and hearth...everything.

Just trying to calibrate my costs. I was little surprised that Everett Steel quoted me $130 with a few cuts (to get the 20's down to size to get home so I could finish them up myself). The most amazing thing is that they are considerably more expensive than Home Depot...but HD isn't an option because they can't cut their 20's for me so I can't get them home.

I'm just surprised that HD undersold a steel company.

Did most of you spend $130 on your rebar?

To be honest, I don't really know. I got most of my rebar donated to me by my brother-in-law, who had it left over after a big job. I know it wasn't that much, though.

Our local home depot sells rebar in shorter lengths, but there is a markup on it. How do you plan to cut it? Could you cut it yourself before bringing it home, i.e. take your grinder or cutter or what have you to the store, cut it there, and load up?

I bought the 20' lengths at the local Menards and folded them into a horseshoe shape to get them into the truck. Sort of a pain to bend them back straight but worth the savings and besides they don't have to be perfectly straight....

I don't have my numbers but I don't think it was close to that. As an option, go to harbor freight and buy this. - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Where I bought my steel, they had a cutter right there. I cut them in half and brought them home. I do had a bolt cutter though - they come in handy, sort of like an ax.

Both Home Depot and Lowes sell shorter lengths here.....4' & 10' for sure....maybe 8' as well. To be honest, to me, the rebar cost was negligible. Can't remember exact costs...but I remeber thinking is was pretty cheap.

So, I bought three 20' rebar from HD tonight. Bought two pieces of pipe, bent the rebar up in the parking lot, threw it on the roof rack. I'll angle-grind it apart at home. I went through the incredibly obsessive compulsive task of "fitting" all the rebar pieces I need for the foundation, stand, and hearth into as few 20's as possible and calculated where the cuts would go. I'll use those positions as the bend points in the HD parking lot, then cut at the bend at home and the bend won't be "in the way" of a useful piece.

But, it's going to be a pain pipe bending several pieces of rebar in the parking lot, a few per trip. I'm already making trips to get concrete blocks and bags of concrete mix, but sheesh...talk about tedious.

This method should cost me about $77 plus the pipes, which can't be returned; they're getting pretty bent up.

Guess this info isn't needed now, but will share anyway:
Lowes 1/2" x 10' rebar is $4.70 (item 12166)
Lowes 1/2" x 4' is $2.78 (item 88830)

Yeah, that's about right. The 10' is $4.98 at my Lowes, but same idea. Prices are identical at HD, but HD also has 20' for $5.98, which is obviously a much better deal than the 10'.

I bought my rebar at lowes as well, they have 8' 10' in half inch and 5/8 in 20 foot,,
I bought 12-10' pieces around 4.75 each.. around 60 $ Thank God I still have a pick-up truck, My daughter keeps bothering me to get a car, but then I would have nowhere to put all my junk, cement, rebar, 2x4 etc,,, which all became good stuff to her once the oven was done..

I took a sawzall with a bimetal blade to home depot, and cut my 20' pieces in the parking lot, and then fit those in my honda. Like BV says, measure twice though.

Got mine today at Lowe's 4.78 each for 10 foot half inch. Got those some concrete tools, some wod for the hearth and some small concrete stands and wire for $210.00 US. So I am up to $610.00 counting my Pawn shop MK-101 saw
