I like that, I like that very much. I'm particularly taken with the way you have tucked the entrance back into the dome. All in all a tidy job on the finish of the render too

Start the cling wrapping right down on the stand and just go around an d around. The stuff will stick to itself, but needs good purchase at the bottom so it doesn't ride up.

And now after some 6+ hours of working - All done!

I am happy enough with the finish. I think once I give it the textured paint finish it will be pretty good. Few gouges here and there.

Unfortunately I tried wrapping it with cling wrap as suggested but the stuff doesn't stick to anything. Even after I get some laid over the dome, the tiniest breeze and it would just blow away and tangle up.

Any suggestions on alternatives - guessing just a light watering daily?

Here's how it looked this morning after removing the front form piece.
Unfortunately just like the sides it didn't come out well and there was a big hole right at the front too:/

So I had another big day yesterday, ended up doing two more wheelbarrows of rendercrete.
First two photos just show the formwork removed. Not the best finish but I will clean it up with cement render today.

Second two show after I have render the top of the entry and the remaining load was used on top of the dome. Unfortunately it rained lightly halfway through the wheelbarrow load and the concrete was a bit runnier and unable to be moulded onto the sides.

I don't have any photos yet after the second wheel barrow load but I was really happy with the consistency (despite nearly ruining it by forgetting to dry mix the ingredients before water lol) and I have actually rendered half of the whole dome!
It's looking pretty good I think. I had to ditch the conduit idea though, too steep for anything except the really dry perlcrete that people use.
I just did it by hand and it looks pretty decent. It will never be as perfect as I envisaged though.
Will post those photos after todays work. I took annual leave so I can finish this off.
Will be doing a 3/4 load of rendercrete to finish the dome and then I'll mix up some cement render to finish those formwork areas off smoothly.

Coming along nicely. Here is a pic of a homemade trowel I used to apply my perlcrete. It helps with keeping the curvature of the dome.

I know you folks can use the water but I am heading to Port Douglas Monday to enjoy your end of the world so a little sun would be nice. But mother nature is mother nature.

Hehe yeah my first experience rendering had nothing to do with my decision to use a concrete based render instead - purely did it because I needed a thick coat to cover/seal around the entrance.
Not sure what other alternatives there were? A cement based render cannot be applied thickly enough to finish the entrance in a suitable way.
If I have to do a cement render after this, well then so be it - but I am hoping I don't. I spent a lot of time getting the formwork right and I will be doing the rest of the concrete tomorrow hopefully, so I will be able to sponge it after and once painted should be OK.

The " penny just dropped" your using the same technique as used to apply pearlite cement to a dome cause its impossible to trowel on in the traditional sense.
Hardly blame you after you first rendering experience was under your slab
I'm not going to dissuade you from the method. Its unconventional but if it works for you... What tha.
But at the end you'll find a difference in the surface texture of the cast parts to the other. A final bagged coat will help. Its just a render mix made a bit watery apply with a sponge and as the cement goes off smooth it off with a rough bit a sacking or old towel will do. That will give you a continuous surface. And its easy, hardest part is waiting got the cement to start to set before doing the bagging bit

Sorry I'm a bit confused about what is going on here?
Are you casting a cover with concrete (cement gravel sand)
Render is usually applied in layers not cast, and is cement sand lime.

Well another hard half days work doing this oven. Luckily the rain has stopped for me today and hopefully tomorrow too.
Did some formwork last night and a couple hours of it today and then did my first pour.

It went okay I think, happy enough though I wont know until I take the formwork away.
I have at least 2 more loads to do tomorrow to finish it.
Was a lot more work the first time as I didn't know how much water was required and I've mixed the concrete about a dozen times.
Near the end of me pouring my concrete my thumb even locked up tense. Weirdest thing ever.

The garden edging for the bottom level didn't go as well as I wanted. The concrete would move it and I got seepage under it. Ended up running gaffer tape around it and that worked well.

Anyways onto pics. First two pics are of my precision formwork, last one is after the pour. That was one wheelbarrows worth of concrete. Will need at least two to finish the whole dome and flue area I think.

Well you were right about that. Its heading our way , we are under a wheather warning for the next 24 hrs and are expecting 100 ( 4 ins rain). Bring it on I say!

If it is moving down the coast then get ready for some decent rain. Haven't been out to the rain gauge but this bit of Bundy has had the best rain for a long time and it is still on now. Just pulled a mini loaf (actually pizza dough) and a casserole from the oven and the steady patter of rain on the patio roof is a pleasing sound. The garden and lawns have been screaming for this for months.

Rip out the blue tarp and enjoy the rain.

I have kept it covered with a tarp ever since I assembled the hearth insulation - didn't want that insulation wet

Seen the wheather report for the week?
They are talking about rain not that showery stuff ..... Fridays to be a storm thrown in for good measure. Might slow you down a tad and you definitly need that cover
