  • Casting a segmented dome

I am considering making a dome out of cast angled segments that will form a dome. I was wondering if when I make the molds if I were to cast a layer of dense castable (say 3" thick or so) followed by another 3 or 4" of insulating castable, letting them both set and then un-mold the shape. I like the idea of them being bonded. Having the extra thickness will certainly make the pieces more stable to build with etc. Once assembled I don't think there will be any issue with stability at all. So my question is is there any reason to not build it that way?

    Thanks

    Re: Casting a segmented dome

Other than practicalities about making a mold for a one off, you normally would not want joints to penetrate the entire depth of the construction. Even with a regular segmental dome, the segments have built in reveals.
