in reading and looking at the scott ovens, they seem to feel strongly about an ash pit, does anyone in the forno bravo camp have any opinions?

Ash cans are the pits
(M) I suspect that even with an ash pit, some ash would remain. I'll use one of my long handled tools to remove most of the ash.
(M) If you include an ash pit, unless you provide a complex chute, you lose a significant amount of wood storage under your hearth stand.
(M) If any Pompeii oven builders have included one, there has been no mention that I can recall.

Robert Musa has an ash slot on his Pompeii oven and he says he never uses it. That made the decision for me...
