    Re: Swampys Refractory cast oven

Swampy, maybe its cheaper to import from Aus. We sell fire bricks for $3 each, and 1350c castable for $35/bag. Dunno what the freight is like, but sent 23t to a job on the south island recently and still beat shinagawa's prices. Some times companies think they have a captive market.

There are pink, red, yellow, gray, and even black firebrick, but they are (with the exception of extremely specialized refractory applications) always solids, and usually dry pressed. That is an extruded wire cut face brick, a regular old brick used to veneer homes.

Swampy, I picked up a ute load of second hand bricks from the Crowe Refractory in Wiri, Auckland, for about $3 each. Some were a bit too manky to be used, but still way cheaper than buying from Placemakers. They also have ceramic blanket and calicium silicate insulating board which I placed under my floor bricks.

              Re: Swampys Refractory cast oven

You are going to have major issues in removing your cast from the mold. You need to cut the circle into at least 2 parts, preferably 3, and fine sand all edges so that they are inclined to remove the mold. Each section of mold should be several parts, or you can not get it out without breaking the cast.

                    Hi Swampy looking good.
Are you going to pour the base inside or have the dome stand on the base?
How are you getting on with the castable?
                    Regards
                    Bart

                      Re: Swampys Refractory cast oven

the base is going to be firebricks so the oven will sit on the bricks.
cheapest refractory concrete I can find is $57 from placemakers in huntly. The local troweltrade depot can get the kerakast 145 from crow for $59 for me and thermal blankets for $90 each(1.2x5m)not a bad price.will probably get all my stuff from troweltrade as they look after me(im a tiler)

things have changed abit and im going to cast a smaller 7000mm oven instead.
i made the dome form from plywood framing lined with tin.fibreglass is going over the top to make it supper smooth then iv just got to figure out how to make a form for the outside that conforms to the inner dome.thinking cap on.

27" is fine. My bread oven is 27" and when making pizza I can do 2 10" pies at a time.
