  • is 6 foot too long ...

    ... for the chimney pipe/flue?

After much searching I have found an eight inch diameter stainless steel pipe for the chimney for my 42 inch pompeii. It really is pefect and at the right price = nothing

It's 6 feet in length and I'd like to use the all of it. But before I do I was wondering if it's possible to have the chimney too long?

    Any advise will be appreciated

    TIA ... Mick

    Hi Mick,

My chimney is 6 feet long; it's a 6 inch interior pipe, made from 3 foot sections. With just 3 feet in place it didn't draw nearly as well as 6 feet. The longer the better, as I understand it - use all of it!

    Cheers,
    Mick

I hope not! I just went up another two foot clay flue section on my oven to get the smoke away from our seating area for a total of six feet! I think we,ll be fine. Maybe the wood will burn a bit faster and hotter due to more draft? Besides, some indoor ovens have flues that go to the roof!

When you talk about wood stoves (the kind you heat with) the Chimney is the engine that drives the stove. longer chimney heats up, and draws creating a constant bath of air across the fire and removes the smoke. Your longer chimney will work quite well for you. I have a 12 foot pergola being built right over my oven and will have to go up 2 feet above that. Not sure how high it will go but I'd bet that the overall length is gonna be more than 6 feet.

All depends on your enclosure. It won't be too long to work. It might be too short. In chimneys, taller draws better.

My 40" Pompeii chimney is 8" diameter 12 foot long and works an absolute treat. It draws exceptionally well and the only time I have ever seen smoke coming out of the front arch is when I was using a leaf blower at full throttle to get some stubborn wood to burn. Only happened once and on the odd occasion, I only idle the blower to get the initial fire really going.
Provided you have a good or generous transition to your 8" flue, you won't have any problems.
            Cheers.

Re: is 6 foot too long ...

I fired my oven with the new, longer 6 foot chimney (3 two foot clay flues) up on Saturday afternoon (6/26/10) and it works even better than the 4 foot chimney did!!! It draws great and I noticed that when the heat started to climb, it really started to turn the oven 'white' almost all at once! I looked up at the top of the chimney because I saw somewhat of a 'sooty' smoke, but when I looked back in the oven, was clean 'white' in seconds! I'm sure it's because of the added 'draw'! I'm very happy with it's ''new performance!
