I used 1", and yes, you will be able to cover seams going with 1" layers. Also, 1" layers are probably easier to form around the sphere than using a single, thicker layer.
I also had a choice of going either way.

I have a local supplier that carries 1" and 2" blanket. For those of you that have used fiber blanket would you recommend 1 layer of the 2" or double up the 1". At first I thought the single thicker layer would work best. Then considered the double layer may be better to cover any seams in the first. Or maybe it doesn't really matter?
