  • temps at wood storage ceiling

I had a strong fire going yesterday for 3-4 hours. The now-insulated dome (one inch blanket + 4-6 inches of perlicrete) was at ambient temp and ambient+5 temp in the morning today.

however, the ceiling of the wood storage was about 90 after the fire and nearly 150 today in the morning directly underneath where the fire was. I have 4 inch perlicrete as under-heart insulation.

i could not find what temps I should be getting there, but I am sure some of you curious souls can give me your readings!

It shouldn't be that hot but...it isn't a problem. Your hearth is almost certainly still wet
    (or rewet from rain).

I have the same 4" as you. The first few weeks I had temps all over the place on the underside - between 120 and around 160. Many times I don't use my oven the next day, so those 150-160 temps scared me at first. I have doors on my wood storage area, when I opened them it was like a blast of steam in my face. I have not measured an underside hearth temp over about 125 in at least 2 yrs (not that I check every time). This is only AFTER a multi hour (3-5) burn and the temp taken the following morning.

All in all, I would say you are pretty normal. I have found the added heat helps dry out any moist wood and combat the ulta high humidity we have here in FL. That being said, I wish I had insulating boards 2+". I feel I have pretty darn good heat retention for about 36hrs then it peters out. Others who used board insulation have posted being able to still bake into day three and even a low & slow on day 4.......seems the Perlcrete/vermicrete comes up about 12-18 hrs less

Thank you! This is reassuring, also, about me being pretty normal hahaha

          Ahhh....leckig!

It is not possible for a person with a WFO to be "normal"! At best we can only fake it when we aren't around pizza! (or bread or oven roasted anything...)
