  • Day one of 42" oven #2

Big day today. Got the go ahead from our customer to start there 42 inch Pompeii oven. Photo attached is the model my partner and I made for there approval. This will be my second oven and best oven. I will pick up the firebricks next week and have sourced a local supplier for our medium duty firebricks. I plan to use medium duty for the landing and its arch and also the vent area but thought I should double check on this before picking up my bricks.

My question is this.....If I go with light duty just outside the cook dome entry on the entrance floor and also its arch and transition area would it be better than using the more expensive medium duty for this area. My thinking is it will reach soak earlier and not steal heat from the cook floor and dome as much as a medium duty brick would for this area. I can go either way but want to do it the best way. As this oven is for a paying customer I want and need this oven to be perfect.

    ......thanks Wayne

I think low and medium duty firebricks are functionally identical in these temperature ranges, so I can't speak to your question.

Your oven in it's pergola is very attractive. I'm concerned that your wooden "hat" over the flue vent will become smoke stained and unattractive, as well as being a possible fire hazard. You might want to redesign this in non combustible (and black) materials, maybe anodized aluminum.

Thanks for the advise so far. We have planned an aluminum fabrication for the cupola all along but for ease of model making it is made out of wood for now. the customer would like a copper roof on the cupola and the details of that will get sorted out as we go. We have put a lot of thought into the best positioning of the oven to tie into the vent that is needed on a gazebo. We have integrated a steel fabricated hub that will tie our rafters together and also this same hub will hold our stack in place at top center.

So good point on the smoke effecting the appearance and glad you have pointed that out. I am guessing not many igloo designs out there enclosed with in a gazebo and then the rain hat/vent combination as we are thinking about. Its nice to get others opinions as to what may be a concern on this so we can plan for it and change things if we need to.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming for us or if you know of a similar build it would be good to see what they have done or learn from them............wayne

I'm thinking your support pilings will get the in way of the peel. I guess one could learn to work around it, but I pivot a lot with a peel and I think those pilings would get in the way. have you considered fewer pilings, perhaps 5, so the open space in front would be wider?

One space constraint is the total square footage of the area between the uprights must be under 100 square feet or we need a building permit. Also customer likes the look of what we have so we will be going with this. I know the posts up front are not idea but we are limited by this smaller footprint.

If possible I am wanting to get back to my original question on the fire bricks.....I am going with medium duty as this is what FB is recommending. In my area Medium Duty are twice as expensive as light duty so I dont want to buy them if I dont need them. I am a little puzzled by dmun's response, it sounds like there is hardly a noticable difference and if this is the case I may want to go with the light duty I used on my first oven. I am assuming the medium duty bricks would take a bit longer to reach heat but then hold heat a bit longer because of the higher alumina content of the medium duty brick. So that is one question regarding Dmuns comment on medium duty verses light duty, but back to my original question about treating outbound from the entrance arch differently that the dome area....Am I alone with the idea of going with two different types of bricks? Medium Duty for the floor, dome and oven entrance arch and light duty for the landing and its arch work was what I was thinking of doing. Of course if I get thinking light duty for everything then this last question is a none issue...........thanks for this

Are you going to install a heat-stop at the entrance? If so, it's somewhat of a mute point. Heat will not travel to the landing and even light duty is over-kill. Having a heat-stop would really be a nice feature. Those guys really hold the heat.

Just looked at your previous build pics.... nice.

I like the vent cap- does it actually turn with the wind?

I also like the stump and table.. very nice.

thanks tman1.....yes the rain hat spins. Seems to work good. Regarding fire brick question I got some good answers on a different post at .... http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f44/...tml#post107977
