I got the roof partially completed. Metal studs, plywood, tar paper, then metal roofing.

Here is a side view with the copper colored metal drip edges installed.

A pic from the other side.

I put a chimney clean-out door at the top rear of the outer enclosure. Just so I could check whats happening inside over the years. It was probably not necessary, but if the vermiculite ever settles and I need to add more, I can.

Here is Danger-boy looking in the door

Lee, yes I insulated and filled it with vermiculite. Here are some pics.

Batt insulation, rated at over 2,500 degrees, I probably won't get the oven that hot, but would it cook the pizzas in a few seconds?

I then used some metal to hold the batts close to the dome

Then filled it with vermiculite, a lot of vermiculite!

That is a nice looking oven! Are you filling the enclosure with vermiculite? Any ceramic insulation? You make it look easy

Ok, its been a few months since I have posted anything. Winter got cold, on the few warm days I was not motivated enough to uncover everything and start laying bricks. Procrastination sucks! I have been busy the last couple of months working on this oven, so let me try to get caught up with the pictures, which will probably take a few posts over the next week or so.

Here is the start of the outer wall.

    Some progress

Ballpark, what did this cost to do? I am curious about price.
    Thanks!
Cost is not too big a factor, think about all the use you will get from it. I can't wait until I have my first pizza party!

I will have to figure out cost. I got all the concrete block from craigslist, price free! 10 blocks here,20 blocks there, etc. the brick was also free, old style brick. I am actually thinking of using some other style bricks because I am probably going to build an outdoor fireplace/cooking area, so I want it all to match. I will need some stone for the veneer of the bottom area. Might be able to get it free, not sure yet.

So far I have paid for two bags of lime, about 7 bucks. Two bags of fire clay, about 40 bucks. Not sure how much concrete, but I have all the receipts. Sand is free. Rebar? Not sure, some free from craigslist, also bought some, will have to go through the receipts. Firebrick at 1.40 a piece, got receipts.

Once everything is done I will do an accounting of everything and post it.

Great Start and it looks like you have a handful of help! Great having the family participate in the build. Too bad the weather is closing in on us, I thought I'd be finished this past July but that did not happen.
The one thing I learned from this site and ultimately from my own build is you can not over insulate!
Again great start and hope you get a break from the winter.

Once I finished the outer arch it was Miller time! Well not really Miller, but you know what I mean. While having my first barley pop I got the great idea to start the cycle of curing fires. So I lit a small fire. Was able to get the center of the dome to 200 degrees, and it held 200 degrees as long as the fire stayed burning quickly. As soon as the fire burned down a little, the temp instantly dropped.

It was very cool having my first fire lit! And since it got dark, I walked back about 75 feet and all I could see was the opening of the oven with the flame burning. Very cool indeed.

I also took this picture because I thought the smoke cloud looked cool.

I reconfigured the form for the inner arch so I could use it for the outer arch. I wanted the outer arch larger so I had room to fit a door to seal off the inner arch.

    Got the outer arch built.
