I will only taper two pieces of brick on the outter arch and leave the rest the way it is. However, I do agree that any taper brick for the arch will be more stable such as your build.

To make the mortar stronger or more stable, I use bigger aggregate (broken down firebrick from scrap left over) in addition to sand for the refractory mortar in area that is thick.

I am done with the outside arch and I pretty much used Dino Pizza idea for the vent except mine does not flarred out. However, I did use his "quaker hat" brick cut idea for the transition vent to chimney which is an awesome idea.

Okay, after two days of doing nothing. I realized that I will eventually have to face the vent/chimney and it is indeed a headache.

I did some mock up to see how it would look like. I am going to spend the next few days on Visio just to just to draw it out and hopefully I will get start working again next weekend. I had to go out of town this weekend and leave my "mistress" alone for the first time over 3 days. I will surely bring picture of her with me and think about her the whole time.

Done with course number 11th and the KEYSTONE baby on Mardi Gras day!

I have to say that it was a joy when I placed that keystone on top of the dome. The height of dome spot was exactly on the money at 17.45" which pretty gave me the prefect ratio of 63% because my door height is at 11". I did some modification from the original plan on the last 3 courses to make sure that I will reach the target height because if I had not make the adjustment, the dome height would had been 16.5" which is not that big of the difference but it is nice to get what you were aiming for. And that doesn't happen very often for me.

Had some problem with course number 11th because my brick guider or indispensable tool was a little too big for the cut brick for the last course. I didn't realize the problem until I started to mortar up the second brick because the side of the guider was pushing the first mortar up brick from where it suppposed to. So, I had to take the angle grinder to make some adjustment and it was golden again!

My wife caught me in the act
That is funny. A few weeks ago my son was wondering why I was spending an inordinate amount of time on this forum. He reckoned it was "oven porn". I didn't realise just how true that was

    great work btw

    Tu,
You are making excellent progress. Can't wait to see what you got done today. The weather was perfect and I am jealous of New Awlins holidays. I had to work Had a couple slices of "authentic" King Cake this morning though Fried King Cake not the decorated cinnamon roll from Walley World crap. It was picked up and delivered (from Joe's Cafe in Marrero) by a truck driver who round trips daily from NO to where I work. He brings it every Fat Tuesday.
Hope that you had a Great Mardi Gras working on the WFO, I'm a little jealous of how fast and great that your build is coming along. I'm afraid that you are going to pass me.
    Keep up the great work.
Also: LMAOROF about the position you were caught in with your "mistress"

course number 9 & 10 done today, tommorow will be course number 11th and the keystone

When the course is getting closer to the keystone, it is very hard to keep the mortared brick in place because of gravity during the process. These mortared down bricks of the course will shift away from it original position whenever I placed another brick next to them bricks during the mortaring process which can be very frustrating. To solve that problem, you can simply mortar down one brick for each course first then walk away from it and this will be your anchor brick for the course. You may clean up the anchor brick without moving the indispensable tool after 15 minutes. Just let it dry over-night or until you feel it is dry enough (4 hours for me) and you can mortar down the remaining brick for the course. Because of this method, I tried my best to place the anchor brick for the next course first before I throw in the towel for the day.

Cut brick for course number 9

Set up platform for easy climb into the oven.

My wife caught me in the act with my true love. After she busted me, I just pretended to walk away in shame. As soon as she looked away, I went back for more.

Careful there, don't let on to everyone know how much fun it really is. Someone might suggest giving it up for Lent

You should have good weather monday and tuesday.

"Happy Mardi Gras!!" to you to and "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler!!!"
It was raining like crazy on Saturday. I did the cut between rain. During the rain, I still able to mortar up the brick under my low budget tent (attached photo). There is no way I am giving this project up for lent because I am no saint .
